Jack was cautiously optimistic when Alice, the new IT intern, started. Fresh out of university and eager to learn, she showed promise. But as the week wore on, Jack began to realize Alice might have learned just enough tech knowledge to be dangerous.
The incident happened when Alice decided to take initiative and “optimize” the office’s shared drive while Jack was on a lunch break. Jack returned to a frantic series of Slack messages and emails that could only mean one thing: something had gone terribly wrong.
“Jack! The shared folders are gone! What happened?” Steve from marketing shouted from across the office.
Jack rushed to his computer, pulling up the server logs. Sure enough, all the shared folders had been moved to a location no one could access. A chill went down his spine.
“Alice, what exactly did you do?” Jack asked, trying to stay calm.
“I just cleaned up some old files and reorganized them,” Alice said proudly. “Everything was so messy! I even renamed a few to make them easier to find.”
Jack’s heart sank. Renaming folders? On the server?
He spent the next three hours untangling the web Alice had inadvertently created. It wasn’t her fault entirely—she was just enthusiastic. But Jack made a mental note to never leave the intern unattended near anything that could erase years of work in one click.
“Maybe stick to shadowing for now, Alice,” Jack suggested gently. “We’ll tackle ‘optimization’ later.”
